Care for depression using EMDR therapy
You are very familiar with how it feels to be depressed. A heavy darkness surrounds you. There are very few waking moments where you feel a bit lighter. You know physical activity helps, but you can’t pull yourself up long enough to move! Once again, you try to sleep it off, but the heavy darkness is still there when you wake up. When you feel it, you return to sleep because it feels like the only escape. One successful way to treat depression is with EMDR therapy.
Having depression can create shame.
You like being around others but don’t want them to see how low you are, so you keep it to yourself and stop engaging with others. You begin thinking differently–that depression is a fault within you. It often feels shameful. You know you have much for which to be grateful and happy, yet knowing that doesn’t make you feel any better. The more power these thoughts have, the deeper the hole of depression becomes. It is a vicious cycle that keeps you in a deep hole. This makes the top of the hole feel impossible to reach.
How therapy can help:
First, know that you are not alone. Know that you are worthy of feeling better. When seeking therapy, people start to realize how good it is to be fully heard and not judged or ‘talked out’ of your depression. It feels good to know that someone sees and accepts your depression without judgment. Even just noticing a minuscule glimpse of light coming through the darkness brings a sense of relief. You begin to realize it’s possible to get out of that deep hole! Simply seeking out a therapist gives you a bit more hope. And, a small amount of hope may be the ladder in that deep hole that helps you reach the top.
First, we’ll demystify it by finding the cause. Then we’ll process the causes using EMDR.
I will help you understand some of the causes of your depression. I will also help you gradually add the things to your life that are known to help others. Sometimes, medication makes the whole process easier and if that is the case, I will help you find the best person to help you with medication. Additionally, with the use of EMDR, I can help you process some of the causes of your depression, which will take the power away from them. Then, you can learn how to strengthen the positive emotions as you begin to feel them.
It takes courage to ask for help
Many people struggle with asking for help. But, when they ask, they always feel better! Here’s how it goes: When you request a consultation, I will call or e-mail you with some times I am available for a consultation. Then we can talk on the phone so I can learn about you, and you can learn about me. I do this to determine a good fit for you and me.
So, take the first step to begin feeling better. Getting over this first hurdle gives you a picture of what to expect. It also gives you hope that someone can help. And if we find that I cannot help, I will connect you with other therapists that may be a better fit. If you call, I can help!
